A bomb blast at a busy bus terminal in north-west Pakistan has killed at least two people and injured eight others, officials say. The blast took place in Kohat, an important garrison town in North-West Frontier Province (NWFP). Pakistani troops are engaged in a military offensive against the Taliban in nearby Swat valley and other areas. Last week, the Taliban vowed to carry out bombing attacks in Pakistani cities in retaliation for the offensive. 'Retaliation' The bomb went off in a crowded bus terminal in the early afternoon, Kohat district police chief Mohammad Idrees was quoted by news agency Associated Press as saying. Mr Idrees said the attack could be retaliation for police operations against the militants. Taliban militants were driven out of Mingora, Swat's main town, on Saturday by Pakistani government troops. Officials said operations in the whole Swat valley region should end in the next few days, although military chiefs are more cautious Last Thursday, attacks in Peshawar, the capital of NWFP, killed at least 10 people. A day earlier, a massive attack in Lahore which targeted buildings belonging to the police and intelligence agency, the ISI, killed at least 24 people. More than 200 people were injured in the explosion. Taliban militants have warned of more such attacks in the coming days across Pakistan in response to the army's operation in the Swat valley, near the Afghan border. |
